Getting Things Done - and Cheaply Too

It has rained most of this week.  We had a month of rain in 24 hours. Apart from snuggling up under a blanket and reading a book or surfing the net during the wet week we managed to make some progress on the home front.

Monday I had a Pterygian removed from my left eye.

Not a great photo but there is no growth across my eye now.

I mentioned that I had bought five cabinets from a kitchen reno last weekend. that means that each cabinet cost $3. We mounted this particular $3 cabinet in the bathroom above the loo. It now houses our medicines. We have had multiple jokes about making sure that the loo seat is closed when accessing the cabinet.
Lucky for you this photo doesn't show the RED (yes red) loo seat. I swear one day I will shout myself a new WHITE loo seat.

I have on many occasions mentioned my love for Freecycle and how wonderful it is to post a message and have folks turn up to take away items I no longer need. This week I was the happy person who turned up and took things away.

A 'telephone table' was offered and I requested it.  I was the chosen recipient. yeay.

This is the before shot of EK in her corner of our lounge room. In the midst of all that stuff is a poor drowning coffee table.
And this is the AFTER with the 'telephone table' in place. The small mountain of teenage junk stuff is still there, it is just a little better contained.
And the sweet little coffee table?
It's now residing on the other side of the room next to Ra's chair. And you can actually see it.

When we went to collect the telephone table we were offered several other items.
The first was a small bookshelf. I happily accepted as Hubster has been wanting one for a while to put beside his side of the bed.
We set it up and surprised him when he arrived home. I made the train on top for him a couple of years ago and he hasn't been able to enjoy it properly since he stopped teaching due to not having a suitable spot to display and use it.

But wait... there's more!

We were also offered a cute little bedside chest. When I saw it, I gratefully accepted it as it is just right for EK's room. It will go well with her teak tallboy and teak stained hat rack.

And to finish on a giggle...

EK as we may wish to see her.

Bag Pattern Testing and Give Away

Recently I tested a bag pattern for Samantha from At Home with Mrs H.

Here is my completed version of the Bow Pleat Bag.
It's a cute bag with its bow and pleat. It has heaps of room inside and features multiple pockets.

I had fun testing the pattern and following Samantha's instructions.  I gave myself some added challenges. I restricted myself to only use fabrics from my stash in my ongoing challenge to use up what I have.  That shouldn't be too difficult... except that I was using a piece for the bag outside that was left over from an apron I had made. It was only just big enough if I didn't perfectly centre the fabric. By this stage I had set my heart on this fabric so had to make it work. I had just enough of the gingham that I used for the lining.  I used the same gingham for the bow and the strap.

Samantha has now finalised the Bow Pleat bag pattern based on the testing and feedback. The pattern is available to purchase in her etsy store, Handmade By Mrs H.

As a thank you for pattern testing, Samantha is offering a copy of the pattern for a give away on my blog - yeay.  One of my readers will win a copy of the bag pattern.

I am excited as this is my first ever giveaway.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Samantha is also offering a 15% discount for the pattern and any other items in her etsy store. Just use the code BOWPLEAT15.

I would love to have lots of people participating in this giveaway so please share away.

Laundry - first stage

Are you ready to see our shocking Laundry?

(sorry couldn't get rid of the blue border)
Hmmm yeah. This is where I wash our clothing.
I did warn you that it is scary.
Hubster painted the two walls with a coat of undercoat when we moved in to cover up the ugly grey.
Space is an issue as is a feeling of total ICK that I have every time I go into this space.
The floor is cement; uneven, ugly and discoloured.
The old cement tubs are rough and discoloured - I am NOT putting anything in there. As you can see I have a board across one so I can have a bit of flat space.
The dryer is around the corner due to the big cement poles blocking access but the floor is a major tripping hazard due to different height slabs which also have potholes laying in wait to turn an unsuspecting ankle.
I have wanted to do something about it ever since we moved here 15 months ago.

Now we are making some improvements. yeay.
Yes it is a rental.
Yes it IS the landlord's responsibility.
No they don't care - they knocked us back on basic fly screens.

I bought several shelves and small units that came out of a kitchen reno for $15. :)
On the weekend Hubster and I installed the double shelf unit on the back wall of the Laundry as the first step in improving the laundry.
 All nice and level.
Below: stacked and ready to go.
Who is that woman with the scary hair?

It is ridiculous just how happy I am to have a proper shelf on the wall.

Bolster Tutorial

I have just completed making the ideal bolster for our Ra. I wanted to achieve a specific look for this bolster. I loved the gathered ends and piping. There are heaps of tutorials on the net for bolsters but none that I could find covered the look that I wanted to achieve.

Most of the tutorials for bolsters fall into one of two categories.
1. the feature a gathered end and the bolster is inserted through that gathered end.
2. they feature a flat circle end and piping. The bolster is inserted via a zip inset in the side or is sewn on meaning it isn't removable for washing.
All these other ways work and look good. None of them met my needs.

I had an extra long bolster cushion and it is made of foam and not fibre-fill like most of these cushions.
The cover needed to be easily removed for washing. If the cushion were inserted through the long end it would be a battle to get the cover to go all the way up the length of the foam; it would grip too much.
I liked the look of the gathered end but I wanted to add piping and I also needed a zipper to make it easier to get the cover on and off of my monster bolster.
The solution was to create my own way of making a cover which featured a gathered end with cute buttons, piping and a side zip.

This tutorial by Jessica of Sew Homegrown covers how to make a bolster with piping including how to make the piping. It features a flat end but no zip.

Having never done anything like this before I figured I would work it out as I went. Just to up the anti, I thought I would photograph my progress and make a tutorial. ;) I will focus on the aspects that I have done differently to the other tutorials as they are excellent and i see no need to duplicate those steps.

Here goes:

1. Measure the bolster:
length (end to end),
girth (wrap tape measure around the bolster)
end diameter (across the end of the circle through the centre point).

2. Cut 1 rectangle (length + 2 x seam allowances) x (girth + 2x seam allowances).
Cut 2 rectangles (girth + 2 x seam allowances) x radius (half diameter + 1 x seam allowance).

Does that sound confusing?
I will break it down a bit more with an example of my bolster's measurements.
length = 83cm
girth = 54.5cm
diameter = 17cm
radius = 8.5cm
I use 1cm seam allowances but you can use whatever works for you.

my single cut rectangle was 85cm x 56.5cm
my two rectangles were 56.5 x 9.5cm

3. Sandwich the piping (raw edge outwards) between the short end of the single rectangle and the long end of one of the two small rectangles (right sides together). It will be easy to see which ones to use because they are the two same sized ends.  Sew this straight seam.

4. Repeat for the other end.
5. Sew a gathering stitch (longest stitch length) on the raw edge opposite the piped edge.

pic below is what you will have at both ends of the longer rectangle.
 7. If you happen to use a zipper that is the same length as your bolster you may skip this step.

Measure along the long side of the cover and mark it for the length of your zipper. My zipper was 55cm. RST (right sides together) sew the long side of the cushion together up to the marked point.

8.  Press seam open and press the seam allowance of the part not sewn.
It should look like the pic below.
 9. Pin zip right side down onto folded and pressed seam allowance. Make sure that the edge of the zip lines up with the folded edge of the fabric.
If your zipper isn't the full length of your bolster, make sure the top opening end of the zipper is at the end nearest to the opening.
pic below of zipper pined in place and ready for sewing.  You can see where the zip and the folded edge line up.
 10.  Sew the zip in place. Provided your seam allowance is the width of the zipper tape you can sew as close or as far away from the zip teeth as you prefer.
 sewn tube with zip inserted.
below is how it will look from the right side, you can barely tell there is a zip there.

11. We now need to finish off the ends as they are currently still flapping round. I was going to give details of how to close off the piping at this point. There are multiple excellent tutorials on how to do this. May I refer you back to the excellent bolster one which I referenced at the beginning. It is the bolster tutorial on Sew Homegrown's blog.
The only thing that needs to be added to this step is to sew the ends together once the piping is sorted.

12. Pull on the gathering threads until the centre of the bolster end is all pulled in and even up the gathers. I like to pull the middle of the circle in nice and tight.  I use the long gathering threads then to sew over the centre a few times to make it nice and tight. I was sewing at night and the colour and focus is a bit off. Hopefully you can get the idea despite the slightly blurry pic.

 13. Time to choose a nice big button for each end. My girl had fun rummaging through my button jars (yes plural) and auditioning several buttons. (again sad night time photos). She chose to stack a bright blue button on a big white one. It was neat how it mimicked the pattern on the fabric.
 Buttons all sewn on.
 14. Snip all hanging threads and put the cover on the bolster. Cuddle it and admire your hard work. :)

Our girl was so excited with her bolster. After cuddling and admiring it she rushed off to put it on her bed. She staged it and photographed it herself.
Now we can tick another item off the list of her room. Not too much more to do now until we can call this room done.

Decluttering in Reverse

My in-laws have their house on the market and are wanting to clear out items in preparation for moving.  Mum says she is in "chuck out mode" I call it decluttering.  When mum gets this way it can be scary for dad who is also inclined to be a bit of a hoarder... at least hubster came by his hoarding tendencies honestly. ;)
Hubster has many stories of his growing up years and the trauma of moving every few years when his dad was transferred again. Some of his horror stories are around his mum throwing out his 'treasures' One story in particular was his 'air tanks' that he had made from a couple of powdered milk tins taped together with plastic tubes coming out of the plastic milk tin lids so he could breath. He was around 10 when this move occurred and permanently marked him. To this day he talks of the distress of his air tanks being thrown out.  He's not too damaged but does like to remind his mother of the trauma caused to him by her 'chuck outs'.  See what I have to battle....

Over the last couple of weeks I have given Mum a hand sorting and labelling photos. That was fun and has lead to further projects... MIL is finally writing a memoir that she has often mentioned telling the stories of her life as a minister's wife and all the strange and often terrible places they were required to live etc. Things sure have changed for the better in the last 40+ years.

When visiting my MIL the other day I was giving her a hand sorting and culling fabrics and bits and pieces. Mum isn't enjoying sewing these days. Her health and eyesight aren't what they used to be and sewing has become a chore and not a pleasure. I totally understand.

In this stage of the clean out I brought home two bags of fabric, mostly quilting cottons and a few other treasures. The timing is good as I am trying to get back into sewing a bit more and have been looking for a few items lately.

here are the treasures.

Amongst the treasures was a large bundle of underwear elastic. Since I am planning on sewing some undies that will be quite useful.

Some years ago mum crocheted these two doilies. They just need to have the ends sewn in and then blocked.  I don't know how to block but will find out.

I don't have any of the doilies she has made and her sight is such that she isn't likely to do any more. These two are truly treasures.
I have only one doily that my Nana crocheted and I treasure it.

My eldest has developed a love for many of these kinds of items now and will be eyeing one of these off (if I know her) ;). I also want to make sure that there is one for each of the other two daughters.

This was the other treasure we brought home (the first pic above is the most accurate for colour). It was my husband's maternal grandmother's foot stool. I am hoping that it comes up well with a good scrub as I quite like its '70's look and the shade is perfect for our lounge room. Hubster was very pleased with this one.

As you can see it is very good condition. :)

I know I am not the only one who appreciates the items that belonged to the previous generation. Somehow they are even better when handmade or owned by a loved one.

Just to finish off - here is the latest pic of Eddie. If it is hard to work out his position, that is because he was sleeping and doing an impression of an upside-down-flying-superman-crossed-with-a-pretzel. He slept quite happily in this strange position for quite a long while.

Oh and acquiring the results of some one else's decluttering isn't clutter acquisition - it is treasure acquisition. :) I swear. Honest.

Project List update

I haven't blogged for the last couple of weeks - now I am stating the obvious...

There are several reasons, the biggest one being I had little to show for my time.

Do you remember the big garden weekend? At the end of that post I mentioned that I hurt my back doing the gardening. I hurt it bad enough to lay me up for about 2 1/2 weeks. My entire back was in a series of muscular spasms - very painful. It has now recovered and I am moving around comfortably and back to my usual mischief. But for over two weeks I lived on pain meds, anti-inflamatories; both oral and topical, heat packs, tens machine treatments and painful massages - all of which provided varying amounts of relief.

Not a lot of physical stuffs got done during this time. I did however manage to do a fair bit of reading of blogs, research into future projects, pinning great ideas, and even listed and sold a number of items on ebay. The dee-clutter never ends and it helps to finance future projects.

The upshot is that my To-Do list got longer instead of shorter.  (what else is one to do when not able to do more than dream and come up with projects for hubster us to complete?)

BUT that is about to change. ;)

Teen 2 has just commenced her winter break and is ready to be my happy-helper for four whole weeks.
Teen 3 has exams this week and another week of school after that. She also has about 3 big assignments to get done in the next two weeks, then she too is my slave helper. Between us I hope to make more progress.

I am feeling way better and during the last week felt myself getting stronger. This is on several levels. My back was much better. My overall health seems to have improved. I say this cautiously as it still doesn't take much to send it tumbling but I am feeling better within myself. My hope is that I am crawling my way upwards towards health again.  Sleep is still hit and miss.

Another reason for not having much to show and therefore not blogging is that I have started several small projects but not finished them. They are all in stages and I didn't want to bore you with every step of every project. I thought it might have more 'bang' if I saved up all the bits for one big reveal. I am not sure that I will do all of my projects like this, as I like to look back on the progress updates, but the smaller ones... we'll see. I would appreciate any comments though on the matter.

I am attaching the updated project list for your amusement and my documenting. When I finally get adding tabs to the top of my page sorted I will keep it there as a reference, I can even add the links - oh the possibilities.  Any hints gratefully accepted.
